NYaltnews is a people-powered journalism for New York, giving a voice to communities and causes that need better media representation. The site incorporates the best of citizen journalism, alternative culture, and activism on a statewide level. We like to call it Guerrilla Media.
NYaltnews also publishes the most relevant Creative Commons media from sources such as Gawker, BoingBoing, ProPublica, YES! Magazine, The Ground Report, Truthout, Center for Responsive Politics, The Sunlight Foundation, Stateline.org and Fairness & Accuracy in the Media.
The mission of NYaltnews is to develop a unique model of journalism that fills in the huge gaps left by the corporate media.
We seek to keep our readers highly informed on a wide array of state topics through alternative channels of information. We think that this will create a compelling site that will eventually become a news leader in New York. At NYaltnews, we also believe that media has a higher calling than just keeping people informed. We believe that good journalism can also have an activist element, and it should be the leading force in helping New York communities change and prosper. Therefore, we insist on playing an active role in using journalism as an element of change.
NYaltnews seeks to raise consciousness and engage readers by publishing quality content, and hopes to expand by building partnerships with strategic organizations and readers. We also seek to practice Guerrilla Media — we don’t just aspire to report the news, but be part of the news. Similarly, we hope visitors to NYaltnews will come not only to read the news, but share the news with us. As alternative media, community perspective is NYaltnews’ central focus, so we hope that you will become engaged with this site and not just a visitor.
